Market Town Allotments
Surrounded by fields and hills, Kington is a small market town (population around 2,500), 21 miles from Hereford and Leominster with a thriving community.
Through questionnaires, talks and chatting to the community, the local environmental group, Kington Local Environment & Energy Network (KLEEN) identified that there was a demand for allotments within the town for those without sufficient space to grow vegetables at home and the a steering group was put together.
The steering group approached the local community development worker, Hannah, for support with their consitution, setting up and negotiating a lease with a local farmer. The group was very enthusiastic and was soon ready to sign the lease on Harry’s Ground, close to the river and with good access from the bypass.
With community and allotment holder support, Harry’s Ground has been cleared and the association celebrated its anniversary with an Open Day and barbecue. Since they started, the association has had a large number of enquiries about the allotments with new potential allotment holders coming forward and are consequently looking for additional land to lease.
